APA Guide

This guide contains information to help you cite your sources in APA format.

Citing Generative AI

Please see below for APA guidelines on how to cite Generative AI (artificial intelligence) tools like ChatGPT, Dall-e, Grammarly, etc used for sources.

On Your Reference(s) Page

First Things First...See SEICAI Student Guide to Generative AI and your instructor's policy about the appropriate use of generative AI for any academic assignments.

Format: Author. (Date of Version). Name of AI Tool in Italics (Version) [Large language model]. Source (if different from Author)URL

Example: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Version 3.5) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

General Rules

Author: AI Publisher/Company

Date: Use the date that the version of the AI you're using was launched. For instance, ChatGPT's version 3.5 was launched in November of 2023. The date is always in parenthesis: example (2023). You will have to look up (google) the date if you do not know it.

Name of the AI Tool (Including version): The name of the AI tool (i.e. ChatGPT) in italics. You also need to list the version if known in parenthesis after the name (version is not in parenthesis).

Example 1: ChatGPT (Version 3.5)

Example 2: AutoDraw (May 2017 version)

[Type of Media/Description]: This will be [Large language model]. Be sure to include the square brackets and period at the end.

Source: We not list the source or publisher because this information was used in the author field for this citation.

URL:  Give the general URL for the tool. No period at the end.

Citing In Your Paper/Project

Since APA does not include any information about the prompt or content of the AI-generated material, you should include information in the paper/project so that your audience understands how you used this tool. Otherwise, use the same in-text rules as always.

In-text without Appendix (Option 1)

In many cases, it may be enough to just include a brief explanation of the prompt used in the sentence with the information from the AI tool so your readers know how how you got the information.

Example: ChatGPT responded to a prompt asking where to find employment with a two-year mechatronics degree, by listing that "graduates with that degree find work in the fields of information technology, automotive research, design and manufacturing, healthcare and biotechnology, finance and accounting, agriculture, and aerospace and defense and have the following job titles: Mechatronics Technicians, Automotive Engineer, or Control System Engineer" (OpenAI, 2023).

In-text with Appendix (Option 2)

If there is a significant/lengthy AI response or text that is particularly relevant to your paper, include a full transcript in an appendix section (your in-text citation will also change because it will need to refer to the appendix). See page 41-43 of the APA 7th edition manual for more information on appendices.

Example 1: When asked, "how can I lower my negative impact as a individual on the environment," OpenAI (2023) gave a practical answer with concrete ideas on how to reduce waste and reuse resources, but also included the surprisingly philosophical response that most individuals do not make much impact unless you are Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk (Appendix A for the full transcript).

Example 2: When asked "how can I lower my negative impact as a individual on the environment," the AI-generated response was both a practical answer with concrete ideas to reduce waste and reuse resources, but also offered the surprisingly philosophical response that most individuals do not make much impact unless you are Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk (OpenAI, 2023; Appendix A for the full transcript).
