This guide is designed to help with Ms. Suber's communication research paper in English 101.

1. Getting Started

Exclamation PointAssignment Requirements - Begin with the End in Mind

(This is the second habit covered by Stephen Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

Review these questions closely for assignment requirements.

Q. What are the 2 assignment requirements?

You are required to complete an Annotated Bibliography and a 4-5 page essay about a topic related to communication.

Q. How many sources and what kind of sources do you need?

You must have 4-5 secondary sources from the library databases, books, journal articles, or credible websites. You must use college-level sources.

Q. How do you cite sources?

You will use MLA format for the  Annotated Bibliography and the Works Cited page at the end of the essay.  The essay will include parenthetical (in-text) citations. A sample MLA paper is in D2L.

Q. What is due and when is it due?

There are multiple due dates for different parts of the assignment. There will be due dates for the thesis statement, individual annotated bibliographies, the introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and rough drafts. Do each part of the assignment in sequence so that you do not fall behind.

Q. What other requirements should you make note of?

You should integrate quotations and paraphrases by using running acknowledgments of parenthetical citations that correspond to the Works Cited page. Remember to avoid plagiarizing.

Selecting a Topic

You will select a concept about communication that you would like to explore and argue your point about the concept. For example, you could choose a form of communication such as email, text, face-to-face interaction, social media, etc. and argue whether or not the communication method is beneficial, harmful, etc.

Example Thesis: Communication via social media hinders the way people interact face-to-face because of the lack of empathy, verbal skills, and intimacy.

Or choose to write on one of the following topics:

  • Communication between genders (including within the same gender)
  • Cross cultural communication between ethnic, religious, or racial groups
  • Unique communication challenges faced by bicultural persons
  • Cross-generational communication (i.e. parents and children or children and grandparents)
  • Effective communication in the workplace
  • Communication between students and teachers
  • Communication among teens
  • Another topic approved by the instructor

Example Thesis: Different cultures have different ways of expressing themselves, and when people of various ethnic groups are brought together, they may miscommunicate consistently because of varying perspectives on non-verbal cues, body language, and customs.
